This Devil’s Tongue (ferocactus latispinus) has been growing this flower since last October. In the last month, we’ve seen it grow much taller. Any predictions as to when it’ll actually bloom?

A few weeks ago the four-wing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) started its beautiful show of flower bracts. The flowers have a shape that reminds me of the origami fortune tellers we used to make in grade school / junior high. This desert native is one of Sean’s favorite desert plants!

We had freeze warnings this past week so I harvested the last of the veggies that were still growing. Time to start planning next year’s veggies!

Back in the fall it bloomed as well when it had gotten confused by the flooding and hail. The cold soon arrived after that and the tree dropped its flowers. Happy to see it’s happy once again!

Can’t believe these pomegranates haven’t been snacked on, pecked at, or blown off by the desert winds. Will we get to eat them? Do you think they are dried out inside?

Desert Ikebana
I’ve been practicing what I call Desert Ikebana for a while using plants from our gardens. A friend recently told me I should share my work, so here it is. Would anyone be interested in a workshop teaching the basics of #desertikebana?

Baby bunnies living in our Elephant Food container! Momma Bunny was persistent in making a nest on our patio this year. She started digging a hole in our flax container earlier but we think it wasn’t deep enough for her liking. We thought she chose somewhere else in our yard to make her burrow, but Sean and I discovered these tiny fuzzies this morning when checking on our patio plants.

I get a lot of questions at work about growing Smoke Trees in the high desert. I say it can be done. For example, this is one of our 3 Smoke Trees. I got this one for Sean as a birthday present a few years ago. It was about a foot tall or so when it was planted, and now it's taller than me. We never water it (maybe once during the hottest time of the summer), it's not hooked up to an irrigation system, and it only receives water from whatever rain we manage to get.
